Wind Farms - Wind turbines producing electricity
Wind turbines grouped together in a location for the purpose of generating wind power or wind electricity are wind farms. Wind farms, or wind parks, can exist offshore or on land. Offshore wind farms are being built in the U.S., but have become common in Europe.
California is home to 3 of the largest wind farms in the world. Altamont Pass, Tehachapi Pass and San Gorgonio Pass are made up of many individual wind farms, forming the larger collections. Over the years, these wind farms have been built and retrofitted. In recent years, interest in wind farms for producing wind power has increased, resulting in these wind farms growing larger. Upgrades are being performed, moving to larger, more powerful wind turbines, improving the efficiency of the wind farms.
Wind farms will likely continue to play a major role in producing wind electricity in the near future as interest in wind power grows.
